ANNOUNCING THE WINNER OF OUR NEW JOINT SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORTING RESEARCH ON NEW YORK CITY-BASED ARCHAEOLOGY

Miriam Entin, CUNY Graduate Center

The Society is pleased to announce that Miriam Entin has been selected as the first recipient of our newly established joint scholarship of $1,500, supporting New York City-based archaeology.  This joint scholarship represents a first time collaboration between our Society and the Metropolitan Chapter of the New York State Archaeological Association (NYSAA).

Miriam is a PhD student currently enrolled in the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.  This scholarship will help support her doctoral research on Jewish ritual baths that operated in 19th-20th century urban America, including an examination of the finds from baths in Lower Manhattan excavated in the late 1990s and early 2000s.  At the conclusion of her research, Miriam will, through this Newsletter and through one of our public lectures, provide the Society with an overview of her findings.

Miriam was selected from among a group of outstanding students, graduate and undergraduate, who applied from institutions across the city.  Each application submitted was accompanied by an endorsement from the student’s professor or faculty advisor.  The applications were reviewed and the recipient selected by a committee of academic members of both the Society and NYSAA.

This is the first opportunity we have had to work collaboratively with NYSAA.  Founded in 1916, the NYSAA is a not-for-profit organization composed of professional and avocational archaeologists who share a passion for archaeology in New York State.  Their Metropolitan Chapter was formed in 1961.

The scholarship will be funded in part by the generous support of our Friends, and by drawing on the endowment set up for our Society by our late Treasurer, Ira Haupt, for whom the endowment is named.  Ira was a devoted member of our Society and an advocate for furthering archaeological research across all areas and all regions, and especially for our city which we and the Met Chapter of NYSAA proudly call our home.
