History

The Archaeological Institute of America, founded in 1879 and chartered by the United States Congress in 1906 seeks to educate people of all ages about the significance of archaeological discovery and is committed to preserving the world’s archaeological resources and cultural heritage.

The AIA New York Society was founded five years later, in 1884, and is now the largest of the Archaeological Institute of America’s local societies. We sponsor lectures and archaeological events for curious citizens in the New York Metropolitan area, and fund an annual student scholarship for New York City students of archaeology and related fields.
